Today’s post provides information about the discipline of Pilates, one of the many programs offered by ASW.
Pilates (puh-LAH-teez) is a mind-body exercise system that emphasizes conscious breathing patterns combined with movements designed to strengthen muscles, particularly the core muscles. This exercise form also improves flexibility and posture. Pilates combines eastern and western exercise approaches and emphasizes form and alignment with movements that are performed precisely in a smooth, slow, controlled fashion.
Originally created the 1920’s by Joseph Pilates who intended it for rehabilitation of US soldiers in the war, Pilates soon caught on for dancers and eventually for anyone who wanted to strengthen their bodies.
Pilates entered main-stream fitness in the late 1980s and its practice has steadily risen in popularity in the US with a 450% increase in the number of participants between 2000 and 2010 alone. The Trend has also moved toward applications in rehabilitation and physical therapy. As the practice continues to flourish, studies have shown that Pilates provides specific benefits to adults over 40, such as tension relief, improved balance, flexibility, and posture, as well as enhanced self-confidence.
With so many Pilates studios to choose from these days, it can be confusing for newcomers to determine the best studio for their personal needs. Anderson Sports & Wellness is proud to offer the STOTT Pilates Method, providing a safe, natural segue from rehabilitation directly into mainstream fitness and wellness, so you can get back to living the life you love.
STOTT Pilates is a contemporary approach to the original exercise method pioneered by Joseph Pilates. Co-founders Moira and Lindsay Merrithew, along with a team of physical therapists, sports medicine, and fitness professionals have spent over two decades refining the STOTT Pilates method of exercise and equipment. This resulted in the inclusion of modern principles of exercise science and spinal rehabilitation, making it one of the safest and most effective methods available. This clear and detailed approach forms the basis for STOTT Pilates training and certification programs. It’s used by rehab and prenatal clients, athletes, celebrities and everyone In-between.
